Menyhért Anna kultúratudós, író, irodalomtörténész, a trauma-kutatás nemzetközileg elismert szakértője. Jelenleg a Torinói Egyetem magyar tanszékének egyetemi tanára. Kutatói pályája során az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem Trauma és Gender az Irodalomban és a Kultúrában kutatócsoportját vezette, majd 2016-tól az Amszterdami Egyetemen Marie Skłodowska-Curie-ösztöndíjasként, később kutatóként a bécsi Wiesenthal Holokauszt-Kutatóintézetben, a CEU Demokrácia Intézetében és a kőszegi Felsőbbfokú Tanulmányok Intézetében dolgozott, a Firenzei Egyetemen volt vendégprofesszor. Százötvennyolc tudományos publikáció szerzője, a Brill-De Gruyter Transdisciplinary Trauma Studies könyvsorozatának társalapító szerkesztője. A Memory Studies Association Trauma és Emlékezet kutatócsoportjának egyik vezetője, a Landecker Digitális Emlékezet Laboratórium-Kapcsolódó Holokauszt Emlékezés projekt tanácsadó testületének tagja. Az EU Horizon programjainak szakértője. Az Országos Rabbiképző Zsidó Egyetem professzoraként a traumatanulmányok oktatása mellett az EU Belső Biztonsági Alap SHIELD és VIRTUOUS projektjeit vezette vallási közösségek védelméért. Civil és szakmai életében a József Attila Kör elnöke, az Európai Írószövetség alelnöke, a Magyar Irodalmi Szerzői Jogvédő Egyesület alapító igazgatója volt, 2011-2012-ben a Szülői Hálózat és a Hálózat a Tanszabadságért kezdeményezője.
Kutatásának központi témája a feldolgozatlan kollektív történelmi traumák hatása a magyar társadalomra: a Trianon-trauma huszadik századi továbbélése, a holokauszt-emlékezet, a kivándorlás pszichológiai dimenziói, és a digitális közösségi tér szerepe a traumafeldolgozásban. Ő vezette be a nemzetközi szakirodalomba a digitális trauma-tanulmányok területet. Az általa megalkotott “befagyott áramlatok” (frozen currents) fogalmát ma több országban használják a feldolgozatlan történelmi traumák elemzésére. Újító koncepciója a “traumapátia”, amit a másik traumájához való empatikus odafordulásként ír le, amely az apatikus viszonyulás helyett az aktív közösségi feldolgozást segíti. Nevéhez fűződik a traumakutatás transzdiszciplináris felfogásának, és a társadalmi trauma oktatásának szorgalmazása, kutatási és oktatási projektek keretében („Trauma” EUniWell projekt egyik vezetője a Firenzei Egyetemen; a CEU „Transzdiszciplináris Trauma-tanulmányok: Trauma kortárs és történeti perspektívából” nyári egyetemének vezetője).
Anna Menyhért is a Full Professor of Hungarian Studies with a Trauma Studies research focus at the University of Turin, where she leads Hungarian Studies. Until 2024 she was Professor of Trauma Studies at the Budapest University of Jewish Studies, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Kőszeg, Hungary; an affiliated researcher at the Democracy Institute of the Central European University, and Visiting Professor at the University of Florence. Earlier she was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the University of Amsterdam, and a Research Fellow at the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies. She led the Gender and Trauma in Literature and Culture Research Group at Eötvös Loránd University, and the Hungarian Studies programme at the Balassi Institute, which hosted international students of Hungarian Studies for a year of study in Hungary. As Professor at the Budapest University of Jewish Studies, alongside teaching trauma studies to social workers and cultural studies students, she led the EU Internal Security Fund SHIELD and VIRTUOUS projects for the protection of religious communities. She is an expert evaluator for the EU Horizon programmes. In her civic and professional life, she was Vice-President of the European Writers’ Council, President of the József Attila Circle (the Hungarian Young Writers’ Association), and founding director of the Hungarian Literary Authors’ Collecting Society. In 2011-2012 she co-initiated the Parents’ Network and the Network for Academic Freedom in Hungary.
She is the author of five scholarly monographs, seven children’s books, a volume of poetry, and over one hundred and fifty scholarly publications, with more than nine hundred citations to her work. Her books include Saying the Unsayable: Trauma and Literature (2008, in Hungarian); Women’s Literary Tradition and Twentieth-Century Hungarian Women Writers (Brill, 2020); and the bestselling fictional biography of the early twentieth-century woman writer Renée Erdős, A Free Woman (2016). She is co-chair of the Trauma and Memory Working Group of the Memory Studies Association, co-editor of the De Gruyter book series Transdisciplinary Trauma Studies, and a member of the advisory board of the Landecker Digital Memory Lab – Connective Holocaust Commemoration project. She directed the Summer University Course Transdisciplinary Trauma Studies at the Central European University, and was the co-coordinator of the Trauma and Wellbeing EUniWell project at the University of Florence.
The central focus of her research is the impact of unprocessed collective historical traumas on Hungarian society: the persistence of the Trianon trauma into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Holocaust memory, the psychological dimensions of emigration, and the role of digital social spaces in trauma processing. She introduced the field of Digital Trauma Studies into international scholarship. Her concept of ‘frozen currents’ has been taken up in international trauma scholarship as a framework for analysing unprocessed historical traumas. Her further concept, ‘traumapathy’, describes an empathetic turn towards the trauma of the other – the active counter-pole to apathy – which supports collective trauma processing. She has been a leading advocate for a transdisciplinary approach to trauma research and for the wider teaching of social trauma.
